Cold water lapped around him, leeching the heat from his skin, but he almost didn't feel it through the chill of shock that squeezed around his heart. Winter sunlight glinted off the water's surface, making it hard to see, obscuring both the murky depths and the golden wisps of hair. He blinked once, then again. It was just a trick - just a trick of the light.
